Council of the European Union and European Parliament 23 April 2009, Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources and amending and subsequently repealing Directives 2001/77/EC and 2003/30/EC (Text with EEA relevance)
Also known as
Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009 establishes a common framework for the promotion of energy from renewable sources, setting mandatory national targets requiring each Member State to achieve a minimum share of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption by 2020 (aggregating to at least 20% Community-wide) and a 10% share of renewable energy in each Member State's transport energy consumption by 2020. Key provisions govern statistical transfers between Member States, joint projects with other Member States and third countries, guarantees of origin, administrative authorisation procedures, grid access obligations, and binding sustainability criteria applicable to biofuels and bioliquids, including minimum greenhouse gas emission savings and prohibitions on sourcing raw materials from high-biodiversity or high-carbon-stock land. The Directive repeals Directives 2001/77/EC and 2003/30/EC with effect from 1 January 2012 and required transposition into national law by 5 December 2010.AI
