Commission Staff Working Document SWD(2022) 82 final assesses the proposed Sustainable Products Initiative, centred on revising and extending the Ecodesign Directive to establish an internal-market framework for sustainability requirements applicable to physical goods. It identifies unsustainable product design, inadequate sustainability information, and sub-optimal ecodesign implementation as principal problems, and supports a preferred package comprising broad product coverage, strengthened product-specific sustainability and due-diligence requirements, a European Digital Product Passport, performance-linked incentives, measures against destruction of unsold consumer products, and reinforced market surveillance. The proposed framework is based on Article 114 TFEU and is intended to reduce lifecycle environmental and social impacts while preserving a harmonised internal market.AI
