Although there is scientific evidence linking variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) to BSE, there is neither certainty concerning the transmissibility of BSE to humans, nor the transmissibility via blood or organs of vCJD. However, the Commission is well aware of the potential problem of transmission of vCJD by blood and blood derivatives.
