Answer given by Mrs de Palacio on gehalf of the Commission (8 February 2002) First of all the Commission has to recall that the competencies of the Union in the nuclear field are laid down in the Treaty establishing the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom Treaty), whose Chapter 3 (Title II) ‘deals with health and safety’.
