In June, 1899, the plaintiff was employed by the defendant, the proprietor of a stable, as a coach driver. In the prosecution of his business, the defendant owned and operated an elevator, and the machinery and appurtenances thereto, used for hoisting carriages and wagons from the cellar of his stable to the various upper floors of the building.
