OPINION

FOLEY, Judge.

Appellant Gary Jensen was convicted of assault in the second degree, Minn.Stat. § 609.222 (1984), for assaulting a police officer with a carpenter’s awl. He contends the trial court erroneously instructed the jury, impermissibly excluded any reference to a prior zoning violation and imper-missibly imposed financial sanctions as part of his sentence.
