On May 16, 1989, following a jury trial in the circuit court of Macon County, defendant Paul Green was found guilty of the offenses of armed violence and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 33A—2; ch. 56½, par. 1401(b)(2).
