The defendant, Gerald Jennings, was charged by substitute information with assault in the first degree in violation of General Statutes *649§ 53a-59 (a) (1)1 and kidnapping in the first degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-92 (a) (2) (A)2 as a result of an incident that occurred on June 6,1987.
