The defendant, Jeffrey Chace, appeals from the judgment of conviction, rendered after a jury *206trial, of assault in the first degree and assault in the second degree. The jury returned a verdict of guilty of two counts of assault in the first degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-59 (a) (1) and (3).
