This is a dispute arising under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), 29 U.S.C. §§ 201-19. The plaintiffs-appellees, campus police officers at Northeastern University, sued their employer to recover overtime payment for time they spent in classes for certification as emergency medical technicians (EMTs).
