Cowin, J.

Following the shooting of four men in the basement of a home in the Dorchester section of Boston on December 13, 2005, the defendant, Calvin Carnes, Jr., was convicted in the Superior Court of four counts of murder in the first degree on theories of deliberate premeditation and felony-murder. The victims were Edwin Duncan, Christopher Vieira, Jason Bachiller, and Jihad Chankhour.
