I. Facts and Procedural Background

David Wood, a professional engineer, prepared plans for land development at the request of Larry Sanders. Sanders paid Wood $123,714.00, but refused to pay the balance of $11,473.50. Wood sued Sanders and alleged he was entitled to the additional sum based on breach of contract, quantum meruit, and promissory es-toppel.
